Do Smart Folks Have Interesting Jobs?

wilder-snoreI recently went to meet up with a new hiking group. This group was filled with people who all seemed to be particularly smart. As conversations will, ours turned to the topic of our jobs. What I discovered is that our group had jobs that are all a little bit out of the ordinary but I’m not sure if I would say that they were really interesting or not.

For example, one of the guys works as an electrical engineer who specializes in designing new lighting ballasts. He tried to explain something to the group about Fulham Ballast and Metal Halide Ballast options and what they do and what the difference is between them. It was moderately interesting but it’s such a specialized topic that it didn’t make for good conversation for the whole hiking group.

A few of us have slightly more “normal” jobs as writers or bloggers or graphic designers. We work freelance and we cover a wide range of topics in our work so we can talk more broadly about what we do. I’m sure that this was also disinteresting to some people on the hike though. Are the jobs that normal people have any more interesting or should we all just stop talking about our jobs altogether?!
