I Hated My High School Guidance Counselor

I hated my high school guidance counselor.

I remember when suddenly she started bugging us all the time about what we were going to be when we grew up.  In my school, good little college hopefuls started thinking seriously about their continuing education by junior year for sure — that’s when we took SAT and ACT tests and started receiving college ads in the mail.

That’s also when our high school guidance counselor started flooding us with aptitude tests and lectures about choosing a career and a school.  I wasn’t interested in any of that, because I already knew what I wanted to do: I wanted to write.

Of course, no one thought I could make it — yet here I am.  So I was definitely right about what I would be when I grew up.

As it turns out, though, they were right too — I probably should have considered other options as well.  For example, since I freelance I am essentially in charge of my own business, so I could have used some business classes or even an MBA program.  There are some great Milwaukee business administration programs to choose from.  And if I had just wanted a day job, something to keep my income steady while I got my writing career started, I could have looked into Florida health career training – the health industry is a reliable career option.

I don’t regret the way I did things, though, and I wouldn’t change anything.  After all, I did finally find my way to my dream career, even if it did take a few extra years!
