The American Dream? Usually, But Not Always!

I own a small business which does pretty well. It’s a bakery that does healthy and nutritional dog treats. There is a good market for that kind of thing here in Ft. Lauderdale Florida since we are catering to a fairly eclectic crowd which this town is full of. Seriously, I don’t think this kind of business would flourish the way mine has if it were in a place like Pittsburg!

So owning your own business and being self employed is often times considered to be the American dream. But at times it can be more like the American nightmare. Really, have you ever tried to negotiate a commercial lease? I would rather poke flaming needles into my eyes! And then there was the time the health inspector got all over me because I was touching the food with my bare hands instead of using rubber gloves. Hello: These are dog treats!

And the nightmare continued as I tried to get FL health insurance. The first Ft. Lauderdale health insurance company I contacted blew me out of the water with their quote. If it were not for the local chamber of commerce which I am a member of I would never have known I might be eligible for the insurance I got. Florida group health insurance is available because of that membership, but without that I would have been doomed. Ah, the joys of small business ownership.
