Get a disability insurance quote before starting private practice

Our society is very litigious when it comes to medical professionals. Since I was board certified I have been involved in 3 suits, although none of them were settled in favor of the claimant. Just being a good doctor is not enough anymore. One aspect of running a successful medical practice has to include having adequate physician disability insurance.

After almost ten years of working in clinics and the emergency rooms of county hospitals, I decided it was time to set up my own shingle somewhere, start a practice, and if I was fortunate enough, find a wife and start a family. The smartest thing I could have done, right at the beginning was to hire a top notch business attorney who had plenty of experience with medical and dental related businesses.

Among the first tasks on the new business start up list was to get a good disability insurance quote. I still remember actually laughing when he suggested it. I had been practicing medicine for over 10 years and had an exemplary record. He laughed right back, telling me to trust him. He’s been there, done that.

Within the first 2 years of starting my private practice, as I mentioned earlier, I was sued three times. None of them had merit, but am I ever glad I had insurance.
