The Last Time I went Skiing

I haven’t been skiing in ages.  Every year I say I’ll go this year, but of course it never happens.  Tickets are too expensive, it’s too much of a hassle to get all the equipment, and quite frankly, I have enough other things to fill my time that it just never seems like a high enough priority.

The last time I went skiing, I was 11.  When I was growing up, my dad worked in ski patrol, so we went skiing all the time.  However, ski tickets were going up in price — even with the discount and free tickets he got — and children ski wear was expensive too, especially for two growing kids.  When I was ten, he was laid off and it took a while for him to find a new job — so rather than to keep buying lift tickets, childrens ski clothes, and equipment every year, he decided we would stop going altogether.

I went one more time after that, as part of a school trip.  I spent the night at my friend’s house and in the morning she drove us to the ski resort.  Since I was a year older and had hit a growth spurt, we didn’t have any ski equipment that would fit me, so I had my first experience with renting equipment at the resort.  Luckily, my friend had a kids snowboard jacket I could borrow, so I only had to rent boots and skis, but I remember it as being a very long, boring time before I actually got out on the slopes!

Careers Requiring The Use of Paper Cutters

One of the ways that you can narrow down your career options is to consider whether or not you will be comfortable using the technology and tools that a career will require on a daily basis. Sometimes these can be really simple tools but the ongoing use of them can be frustrating.

For example, let’s look at some of the careers that require the use of paper cutters:

  • Teaching. Teachers almost always have to use paper cutters at some point throughout the school year.
  • Trophy shop employee. Paper cutters are used in trophy shops for a number of different jobs related to the cutting of plates for trophies.
  • Office secretary. Anyone who works as a "go-to-person" in an office is going to probably be asked to cut papers now and then. The paper folder and rotary trimmer are other tools this job might require you to use.
  • Start-up business employee. Start-ups require their employees to do an array of different work since the business is so small. That can include paper cutting tasks.

Imagine if you really hated using a paper cutter. These are just some of the careers that you might not want to get. That may seem like a bad thing but when you have a whole sea of career options to choose from, it can actually be a great thing to help narrow down your choices to the job that you’re going to like the best!

Pros and Cons of Barricades at your Place of Business

There may come a time when you need to set up barricades at your place of business. When that time comes, you will quickly see that there are benefits to setting up these barricades but there are also drawbacks to their use.

The main benefit to barricades is that they serve the purpose of keeping people safe on a business site. For example, if you are renovating the building then there might be areas of the site that aren’t safe for customers to be in. A temporary fence can keep them out of those areas and therefore can keep them out of harm’s way.

However, barricades act as a deterrent to people and although this is a good thing it also means that you are going to see a drop in business traffic as a result of the barricades. Let’s face it; most plastic barricades are ugly and that doesn’t encourage people to come spend money on your products and services.

When the time does come to set up a barricade for whatever reason, try to get through the period as quickly as possible. You want to keep everyone safe on site and to take care of whatever needs to be taken care of to get the barrier back out of the way. Once it’s been removed, hold an event or a promotional deal to generate business again.

It’s Already Time for School Supplies

If you take a walk through almost any store today, you are going to see that there are school supplies for sale on the shelves. I wish that they would take them off of the shelves for just a little while longer! Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t have any problems with discount school supplies. I’m a big fan of them myself even though my school days are done since I use a lot of them around the office. I’m just not quite ready for summer to be over yet!

It seems like it was just May and I couldn’t believe that Fourth of July items were for sale in the stores already. Now the Fourth of July feels like it was forever ago and we’re all getting ready to wrap up our summer vacations and move on with the rest of the year. Before you know it, the school supplies will be off of the shelves and we’ll see Halloween costumes going up for sale.

I guess that there’s nothing that we can do about time passing. But it seems like it goes even more quickly than it needs to when the stores are putting their seasonal things up for the year. Yes, of course we need to start buying things in advance of the time that we actually need them. But it makes it feel like the calendar is just rushing past too quickly.

Different Types of Vacations

Are you getting tired of taking the same old kind of vacation that you always take? Maybe you go to visit the relatives every year or perhaps you make semi-regular trips to Disneyland or the Las Vegas Strip and you’re thinking that travel is getting as boring as being home all of the time would be.

Here are some ideas for new vacations that would offer you something different in terms of your travel experience:

  • Ecovacations. These are vacations that are designed to be eco-friendly while giving you a chance to see some of the neatest places in the world - the places worth preserving!
  • Adventure travel. Some people book charter flights and take off to do zipline adventures or skydiving or swimming with sharks.
  • Meditation retreats. If you really want to get away from it all then maybe you should think about going to a retreat destination complete with mandatory periods of silence.
  • Volunteerism. There are many organizations which allow you to volunteer in different parts of the country. You get cheap travel and an amazing experience from the trip plus you help others.

Don’t keep doing the same old thing on your vacation. If you’re going to do that then you might as well just stay home and earn enough money to pay the bills!
