The Last Time I went Skiing

I haven’t been skiing in ages.  Every year I say I’ll go this year, but of course it never happens.  Tickets are too expensive, it’s too much of a hassle to get all the equipment, and quite frankly, I have enough other things to fill my time that it just never seems like a high enough priority.

The last time I went skiing, I was 11.  When I was growing up, my dad worked in ski patrol, so we went skiing all the time.  However, ski tickets were going up in price — even with the discount and free tickets he got — and children ski wear was expensive too, especially for two growing kids.  When I was ten, he was laid off and it took a while for him to find a new job — so rather than to keep buying lift tickets, childrens ski clothes, and equipment every year, he decided we would stop going altogether.

I went one more time after that, as part of a school trip.  I spent the night at my friend’s house and in the morning she drove us to the ski resort.  Since I was a year older and had hit a growth spurt, we didn’t have any ski equipment that would fit me, so I had my first experience with renting equipment at the resort.  Luckily, my friend had a kids snowboard jacket I could borrow, so I only had to rent boots and skis, but I remember it as being a very long, boring time before I actually got out on the slopes!
